Certification Requirement

Occupational Health and Safety regulations in BC and Yukon now require crane operators to carry a proof of competence card.  WorkSafe BC and Yukon Worker's Compensation Health and Safety Board recognise the Fulford CraneSafe Certification as proof of competence — with our certification you will be in compliance with workplace health and safety regulations.

The CraneSafe Certificate provides operators with the required proof of competence for the following types of equipment in BC and Yukon. The types of cranes each crane type is qualified to operate is also indicated below (i.e. crane operators who are qualified to operate Friction Lattice cranes are also qualified to operate all other Mobile cranes and Boom Trucks but not Tower cranes).

Development of CraneSafe Certification

The CraneSafe Certification system has been developed over three years with the extensive support of the BC Association for Crane Safety, WorkSafeBC, the BC Industry Training Authority and 52 Crane Industry task group members who volunteered their time to ensure the CraneSafe system will work for industry and operators in BC, Yukon and Alberta.

The goal of the certification system is to increase the safety of crane operations in BC and Yukon. As of 2008 crane operators in BC and Yukon are required under revised Occupational Health and Safety regulations to hold a Certificate of Competence to operate a crane.

Assessments are now available for the approximately 12,500 crane operators registered with the BC Association for Crane Safety. We will be delivering approximately 325 assessments per month in BC and Yukon to February 2011.

Assessment appointments will be given to operators on a first come, first served basis. As of the end of May 2009, all operators registered with the BCACS will have received a notification letter outlining the certification requirements for crane operators in BC.

Certification Deadline – February 28, 2011

With the introduction of mandatory crane operator certification in British Columbia, a two year assessment campaign was launched to give existing crane operators from all regions of the province the opportunity to be certified prior to the February 28th, 2011 deadline.

This two year assessment campaign closed on February 28, 2011. The assessment capacity is being retooled to on-going operational levels and the reworking of the assessment system required the fee for practical assessments to be increased for assessments delivered after the deadline. This fee is the same for any location in British Columbia and the assessment application process remains the same.
