CraneSafe Certification LevelsCraneSafe Certification has four levels. These levels apply to all of the crane classifications. Levels B, C and D are currently under review. For more details on the review process, see News & Updates (12 February 2010).
LEVEL AThis is the highest level of certification and is achieved by successfully completing the CraneSafe assessment.
LEVEL B
Currently under review and not being issued. Level B is intended to be used by apprentices and other trainees who are learning to operate a crane, or learning to operate a different class of crane on the job. It requires an operator be indirectly supervised with some restrictions as to type of lifts the operator can perform – no critical lifts without direct supervision, indirect supervision available at all times. Level B is primarily used by trainees and apprentices who are working toward their Level A certification. LEVEL C
Currently under review and not being issued. This is for individuals learning to operate a crane in a directly supervised environment who have no previous crane operating experience. Level C restricts the type of lifts the operator is permitted to perform. The Self Erect Tower Crane Certification will use this Certification type where individuals are studying to prepare for their Level A Certification which will then permit them to work unsupervised. Brand new operators on other machine types will also use this where they and their employer are unsure if the operating role will be a 'fit' for the individual – Level C requires minimal investment should the operator candidate not prove suited to crane operation. LEVEL D
Currently under review and not being issued. Level D certification was established for cranes used on an occasional basis where the operator does not have the full scope of skills, abilities and knowledge to fulfill Level A requirements. Criteria This certification is held by the employer on behalf of the individual operator and can only be used under the following criteria:
Competencies Industry has defined the minimum competencies required for Level D certification which are detailed in the Core Workplace Competencies. The employer is responsible for determining the competence of the operator and must document the required skills, knowledge and abilities as well as allowed lifts on the application. Successful completion of a theory exam is required. No third party practical assessment is required. Single Employer Worksites Level D certification only applies to single employer worksites. Examples of such sites are:
Certificate Upon successful completion of the application process, a photo id card will be issued in the name of the operator and their employer. The card specifies the employer and site where the certification is valid. Level D Certification is not transferable between employers. If the operator leaves the employ of the employer named on the card, the certification is no longer valid. Once submitted along with a passport photo or e-mailed digital photo the application will be processed and filed in our offices. A certification card will normally be mailed out within two weeks of application. Crane LogbookWorker's Compensation regulations require a crane equipment log book, or daily check sheet record, to be kept with the crane and accurately filled out each day the equipment is used. This log book is in addition to a vehicle log book required by commercial transport regulations. If you do not have such a log book you are welcome to download this log book in Microsoft Word format and modify it to suit your needs. Log Book.
